Rules

In order to participate in experiments at the NUS Behavioural Lab, you must register in our database. Part of this registration process involves acknowledging the following basic rules of conduct:

  • You can only register once in the database. Registering multiple accounts undermines our scientific research. Any participant found with more than one profile will be excluded from all future studies.
  • Only current NUS students who are at least 18 years old are eligible to participate in experiments. You must bring your valid matriculation card to each session.
  • You cannot directly register for an experiment. Instead, you must wait to receive an invitation via email, usually about 1 week before the planned experiment. Only the invited people may register in that experiment. Not everyone will be invited to each experiment, and some participants may receive the invitation later than others.
  • If you receive an invitation email, you can click on the link and register for one of the available sessions. Spaces in an experiment are limited, so it is important to respond early to ensure that a space will still be available. Please make sure that you will be able to attend the session before registering. In some experiments you may be allowed to cancel your registration if you are no longer able to participate. Cancellation must be done well in advance (at least 24h before the session) to allow replacement participants to be recruited. Late cancellations will be treated as a no-show.
  • To ensure that the required number of participants show up, some extra people will usually be invited to participate. It means that some people who come for the experiment will not be able to participate. As a compensation, they will receive a show-up fee, which may vary across experiments.
  • Participants will usually be compensated based on the decisions they make during the experiment. The exact amount of this payment is determined by the researcher conducting that particular experiment.
  • If you sign up for the experiment but do not show up, you will receive no compensation and will be charged with a "no-show" penalty. The more "no-show" penalties you have, the less likely it is that you will be invited to future experiments. A general rule is that people with 2 or more no-show penalties are no longer invited to experiments.
  • All experiments start sharply on time, so please arrive to the lab 10-15 minutes in advance. If you arrive even 1 minute late, you will not be able to participate because the experiment will have started and adding new participants will not be possible. Late arrivals are treated as a "no-show" and you will receive no compensation.
  • During an experiment, you must follow the rules explained by the experimenters.
